SHE CHOSE. Exhibition Launch Night

1.JPG

Who, What, Where and When...

For nearly a year and a half I have been running my business out of my now home away from home - Newstead Studios. It was a no brainer for me to launch my exhibition and house it in this beautiful space for people to come and walk through. For some time I had been watching installations and exhibitions coming and going out of the space and knew it was time for me as a creative to finally host my own.

On Friday 30th August I proudly launched my passion project ‘SHE CHOSE.’ surrounded by close friends and family but also a community of people I have been blessed to meet and work with through my business ‘Grace Elizabeth Images’.

With a few tears shed, a big installation day and lots of smiles, laughs and hugs I thought it the right time to reflect and share with you some precious moments accompanied by little notes that were captured at my exhibition launch.

Thanks for visiting and enjoy!

Earlier that week I purchased 6 disposable film cameras that I handed out to all my guests. I wanted them all to be photographers for the night and to photograph each other as well as all the little details that they loved about the exhibition.

You will find little #caughtonfilm moments scattered throughout the event photos. Spot the difference guys!

All the Delicious Nibbles

Jacqui from Miss bliss created the most incredible grazing table for the night (red wine goats cheese.. need I say more?) and it was absolutely divine! Enveloped by stunning flower arrangements from the beautiful Sheridan from Fiflar Flowers what a match made in heaven.

So, What is She Chose. About?

A body of work exploring womens reproductive rights brought to you by Grace Elizabeth Images.

The project encompasses 21 portraits accompanied by 9 unique stories exploring why we need to ensure that women today feel safe to exercise their right to equality, including access to emergency contraception and terminations, where so many women, past and present, have been denied this right and even criminalised for their choices. For women, freedom of choice over our bodies and reproductive rights is still just as important as ever - for past, current and future generations.

She Chose aims to open up a dialogue through visual storytelling about a topic where women in today’s society still feel shame in talking about.

After observing so many women all over the world take to social media in May to express their shock at the news of the criminalisation of abortion in Alabama, I felt compelled as a photographer to start a project that gave women a voice and a platform to share their stories and experiences here in Australia.

These brave women have had to make choices at some point in their life. These choices have come from a place that only a woman can know. They have made decisions that by no means have been easy, but has given them autonomy over their own bodies, a freedom and a path to live their life. These are reproductive rights.

My hope is that by reading these raw, brave and personal stories shared by these extraordinary women openly discussing abortion, emergency contraceptives and sexual, physical and mental health that we can all be open minded as a community and be reminded that every individual woman’s journey is her rightly her own.
