Portrait & Branding Photography - Tips and Tricks

We shoot a lot of branding portraits here at Sun Box Studios, so we thought we’d share some tips and tricks for capturing personalities and helping clients be comfortable in front of the camera!

  1. MAKE PEOPLE FEEL GOOD!

It’s a no brainer, if you’re a photographer and want results out of your clients, make them feel comfortable, make conversation, give them direction, have a repertoire of poses that you can roll out during your shoot. Give them feedback, tell them what they’re doing well and show them during their shoot just how good they look!

  2. FIRST HEADSHOT? BE PREPARED

I always make sure my clients feel put together and prepared for their shoot. If you’re getting portraits taken - invest in a blowdry or having your makeup done, then take youself for a wine after! Have 3 or 4 outfits ready to go with a few back up options so you get longevity out of your shoot and you’re not repeating the same photo over and over.

  3. NOTICE THE DETAILS

Sometimes being a photographer means wearing many hats, you need to notice the small details as well as the big picture. Is their hair sitting right and out of your clients face? Are their clothes styled correctly and flattering for the pose you’re having them sit or stand in. Is there a rogue hair tie, we all know those things come back to get us when editing!

  4. BREATHE

There’s a level of vulnerability that comes with sitting and having your photo taken, we know sometimes it isn’t easy! But it’s worth it for your brand and business. Remember to relax, breathe and trust the process, if you have ideas and suggestions - pop them out there!

Your photographer is there to guide you and make it an easy and enjoyable process. It’s their job.

  5. VARIETY

Are you giving your clients enough variety in their headshot shoot?

I always try and give my clients a seated and standing option for each outfit we shoot. I also like to give them landscape and portrait versions so they can use them on social platforms and their website.

Happy shooting!
